The MAVerick Ensemble concludes the 2008-2009 concert season with a concert featuring the music of the two founding members of the ensemble in addition to other works in contrasting style. In 2005 the MAVerick Ensemble premiered Paul Oehlers's award winning piece, Jaggernaut, written for cello and electronics and dedicated to the Artistic Director, William Jason Raynovich. The new work will feature the poetry of Joan Larkin, who was recently a Distinguished Visiting Poet at Columbia College. Both composer and poet will be at the concert to hear the world premiere. Also, William Jason Raynovich's Clarinet Sonata, will have its Chicago premiere performed by Andrea R. DiOrio, clarinet, and Mark Sudeith, piano. Raynovich and Oehlers have attempted to bring an eclectic mix of contemporary music to Chicago.
The string quartet of the MAVerick Ensemble adds another work to their quickly expanding repertoire, Nell'ombra, nella luce ("In Shadow, In Light") by Pulitzer Prize winner, Steven Stucky. In his own words, the piece is "based on simple oppositions between 'bright' and 'dark' musics."
Finally the program will feature MAVerick, Lisa Geothe-McGinn, on Carter's Scrivo in vento, in continuing to celebrate Carter's 100th birthday. Ms. Goethe-McGinn with Ms. DiOrio will perform the virtuosic duo by VIlla-Lobos, Choros No. 2.
"[The MAVerick Ensemble's] performance of Music for 1, 2, or 3 people reminded me of David Tudor's." - Christian Wolff
